As the scope and influence of the New Order continues to grow, an increasing number of EVE players have become Agents, sworn to uphold the Code. They operate both inside and outside of the mighty CODE. alliance.
The bot-aspirants of highsec have long recognized the deadly threat posed to them by members of CODE. Sometimes they forget to consider the countless non-CODE. Agents, whose weapons of war are no less lethal.
Agent Larsulrik Napsterbane earned his elite PvP stripes by killing mining vessels such as weaponman110's untanked Retriever. A standard termination notice was delivered to the misguided miner.
The miner's response was decidedly nonstandard. And he completely failed to pay his 10 million isk permit fee.
When weaponman110 was instructed to cease his resistance to the Code, the silly miner continued to dig his own grave.
Yet Larsulrik saw the good in weaponman110. All he needed was an understanding Agent willing to help him unlock his potential. In Larsulrik Napsterbane, he found exactly that.
Unfortunately, weaponman110 had difficulty believing his great luck.
The miner lacked faith in the system. Apparently someone told him that mining permits aren't a good deal--even though he'd already seen what happens to unlicensed Retrievers!
By this point, weaponman110 felt he'd alienated Agent Larsulrik to such a degree that there was no turning back. He suffered a nervous breakdown, most likely thinking about his lost opportunity to become compliant.
No longer capable of drafting a complete tearmail, weaponman110 resorted to sending Larsulrik random links.
The miner remains in a state of darkness. Never fear, dear reader: Our Agents are always ready to rescue a miner, whenever an opportunity presents itself.
its all that asteroid dust they are inhaling I tell you!
ReplyDeleteSo you just snort the same shit when you blast em, you collect the same shit when you slavage em, you are a miner you just mine miners and steal the shit because you lack patience. Keep drinking that cool aid bitch, you know your just the same as a bot and just the same as a miner, your nothing short of a miner and you cry the same as one too.
DeleteIf you really want to be elite pvp'ers you should join Goonswarm instead of playing with Jamey who couldn't cut it as an elite player.
Its your failure you smell, it permeates everything around you, James reeks of it, and if you want the stink to wash off you need to apply to Goonswarm and be a real PvP'er.
DeleteNeat, James has a groupie
DeleteThat miner is representative of their entire species. This is why highsec needs the Code more than ever. The war is far from over, now is the time to go out and commit miner murder.
ReplyDeleteIn game of course! And that's 'minEr' not 'minOr'! Stop killing your kids IRL you silly carebears!
Still confusing reality with the game, you need help, you need to stop insulting the dead, you need to move out of you moms house, you need to get a job and you need to become a functional member of the community, or as you and your group so love to put it in past posts, you can become AN HERO, and do the world a favor.
DeletePandemic horde is the PVP ELITE, Code can never compare.
That’s kind of inappropriate and
Deletedisrespectful to the victims of RL abuse IMHO.
I agree with the previous poster, making fun of irl murder is not cool.
DeleteWE ARE NOT YOUOR JEWS!
DeleteYou know there's a special place in hell for people like you who laugh and poke fun at a persons suffering and misery, or did you even think about the people who survived that actual tragedy?
DeleteYou poke fun at the murder/suicide you poke fun at the victims too.
Anons406-1251
DeleteThanks for your tears. You guys must be from the Pandemic Horde anti gankers.
Good luck with that butthurt. Watch for triggers.
\o/
Real PVP players not you suicide pretenders.
DeleteYou salute your hitler with one arm moron, and remember james like you to finger his ass while you blow him.
DeleteThe Nazi still thinks itself great despite still picking on the defenseless and the dead.
ReplyDeleteThis violation of blog law by not having a moderated blog is unacceptable we will now post freely and allow our friends in the same endeavor to police blogger to spam this blog.
ReplyDeleteTrolls win, ALWAYS!
YAY TROLLS!
DeleteGanking, mechanically, is fine. It's part of the game and another risk for a player to manage. But when conversations and EVEMails are saved and promulgated on websites with tags like 'tears' and 'butthurt' and when players go further than the gank itself to draw out the distress of the ganked player for their own enjoyment (like inviting them to a conversation and then antagonising them with rhetoric and deliberately provocative language)... and the objective becomes to upset the other person ('delicious tears'), that's when you have a problem. Those twisted little shits should get a knock on the head IRL.
ReplyDeleteBy all means, be proud of the worth of the kill you just got, and maybe chuckle that someone else had a bad day, but don't draw it out and antagonise them to the point they're *actually* upset, then post the results.
Your sweet sweet tears feed us. Your delicious lacrimations are so so good. Keep crying, carebears
DeleteYes keep pretending children keep trying, your lack of skill is so apparent that all you have is suicide ganks and this website.
DeleteStay there and leave the real war and fighting to the actual elite.
You are right, it is PvP...but It's low end PvP. It's sucker punching PvP
ReplyDeleteHow would a whiney crybear like anon411 even know what PVP is?
DeleteMuch less that any pvp in EVE is viable.
One of kalynn's killer karebears must have taught him how to pvp.
Still acting like making fun of dead people is good, ever think about the victims who survived that, oh right you don't give a shit.

Why do people use the phrase "passed away" instead of committed suicide? Don't they know what REALLY happened?
inb4 someone cries how I don't have common decency or whatever, like my words are worse than killing your own children and committing suicide.
AnonymousJune 4, 2017 at 12:34 AM
Man, what's with carebears and RL death threats?
This is why EVE needs a screening process for highsec mining. We should make every highsec miner pass a test to see if they can be trusted to mine responsibly in highsec. We need to weed out the criminals.
Some of them have already proven that the RL violence is not just words. One of the leaders, and most outspoken, of the "anti-gankers" believes it's ok to harass people in RL over in game pvp. He believes it's ok to violence people in RL.
And his predecessor kalynn was such a rager he couldn't seperate RL from game and we all know how that shit ended.
And they're not the only ones. That foxbolt guy, holy shit. I saw his videos before he took all that shit down, that guy was crazy. I mean like rocking in his chair while grasping the seat all while trying to convince the world he was entitled to recieve a monthly stipend of real dollars from his corpies so he could quit his job and run his EVE corp..... Wow
You should all be afraid of highsec miners. You should be very afraid.
AnonymousJune 9, 2017 at 2:46 PM
They are not 'people' friend, they are bots. What are you, some sort of "machine hugger"?
Grow up. If some anon shitter is so weak they off themselves over comments in a video game blog, they probably did us all a favor. They most certainly helped future generations by weeding out some bad genetics. How stupid are you?
Wolf SopranoJune 19, 2017 at 7:11 PM
Haha thats rich coming from thomas who likes to sperg in local now about how hes NOT trying to save a freighter while fail repping it in a basilisk ag still worship shardani too! Disgusting
AnonymousJune 23, 2017 at 5:29 PM
You need to leave your friend kalynnpiggie out of it, ehneepiggiepoo. Only agpiggies commit suicide over a game.
AnonymousJune 26, 2017 at 7:30 PM
I hope part three is when James details how highsec can save eve if we eradicate alphas and miners.
That's 'miners' you silly carebears, quit murdering children in RL. ;)

Antigankers are failing so hard right now!!!
Never forget shardani XD XD XD

In game of course, you silly ag shitters need to stop killing folks RL.

Aaahhh..... back to miner murder, everything is right with the world! ;)
Thats 'miner' not 'minOr' you ag freaks! Ffs learn to control yourselves! You need to keep that in game friends.
That being said, Kill All Miners!!! Ahahahaha!

wow sounds like that antiganking moderator that they worship that killed his child and then himself
ReaperJuly 29, 2017 at 11:30 AM
If only shardani was CODE compliant, who knows what might have been.
If only code knew how to PVP they wouldn't be suicide ganking for a living and actually PVP'ing.
DeleteGanking and any type of 'criminal' type of gameplay can be easily 'fixed' simply by tweaking some of the game mechanics. i.e
ReplyDelete-don't allow docking in HS stations if the sec.status is considered criminal in that system security.
-fix the infinite bumping abuse
-actually ban players pulling Concord (no they don't ban people doing it.)
There are many very simple things that can be done. However many decisions about those things are stuck in some 'mysterious' reasons-reasons debate.
Welcome to 2017, why are you still in 2012?
DeleteEverything you just whined about has been whined about by countless braindead miners for years now.
EVE is supposed to be a game where anyone can shoot anyone at anytime, the consequences already in place are all that's needed.
Plus, you are wrong about all of it. This game's not for your kind.
Well now there's a new one,
DeleteCode = racists
Well duh, they are Nazis after all.
DeletePersonally, I'm a little digusted at how things are handled.
ReplyDeleteA criminal in a ship = let's get him.
A criminal in a pod = nothing wrong here, let's continue the patrol.
Same with docking. A criminal being alerted at the gate can still dock without any negative effects. By all means, we'll try to stop the thief at every checkpoint, but we'll actually allow him into the bank at the end of the street.
pvp = players versus player
ReplyDeleteganking = players versus nobody since the second party doesn't shoot back, it's even lower than pve (players versus environment) since the NPCs shoot back at least
But this is their "Elite" pvp, how else will they get kills?
DeleteCode doesn't get kills they get suicides, they are just space terrorist screaming about their savior and getting concorded on the regular. Don't even bother high sec is where the riff-raff noobs and pretenders are anyway, no one with real pvp skills plays in there anyway.
Delete... not to be confused with circle-jerking blobs ( with or without Logi luv ) that rarely suffer any damage even if the 2nd party is flying a combat hull... seriously, guys... most of you who claim to be PVP'ers aren't that good at it. SOLO PVP is the only pvp, and most of you will need fresh panties just thinking about it, nevermind undocking.
ReplyDeleteCODE = CIRCLE JERKING.
DeleteJames is the pivot man.
Playing soggy biscuit is he.
DeleteEh, still find it boring. If I wanted to do DPS races I'd go back to WoW
ReplyDeleteI see the problem here. You think hisec ganking equates to PvP.
ReplyDeleteWhat a laff.
Fact is, hisec gankers are the biggest joke in Eve.
Yea, we can tell by you non-stop deluge of whiney tears
DeleteI know minerbumping is the best place for ganker tears, they try sooooo hard.
DeleteIts cute how hard the code try, they should really try not to cry so much when the big boys actually do some real fights.
DeleteKnowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit
ReplyDeleteWisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit basket.
High-sec ganking may, technically, be pvp, just like using an Vulcan mini-gun to shoot a guy firing back at you with a Daisy Red Rider bb-gun would be a "gunfight".
But what is being discussed here is not the technical aspect of what is and is not, pvp. It is about whether high-sec ganking should be considered as part of the same category as other forms of real pvp, where the other guy can shoot back.
Player vs player is just that. There are no "forms" of pvp, it's either 'player vs player' or 'player vs environment'.
DeleteWhen I blap some sniveling ore whore it's pvp, when a ratter shoots npc's it's pve (until the gank fleet drops in, then we're back to pvp).
If you don't like getting ganked learn to play properly.
You can theorize and postulate until the servers shut down, but the FACT is that carebears will always fail at EVE because EVE is about punishing the weak and stupid, like any idiot that goes afk while undocked, anywhere in EVE.
EVE is not the game for scared crybears.
And there they go again, if the gameplay miners did was improper they wouldn't be able to play, just because you adopt one playstyle and miners pick another doesn't mean you or the miner are playing wrong, just differently.
DeleteHowever to call gunning down someone who has no ability, or little ability, to defend themselves "elite PVP" is the same as sucker punching a 6 year old and calling it championship boxing.
Shooting somebody in the back also requires two people, but would you call it a fight? Your logic is technically correct, but isn't pvp surposed to be something to be proud of? Ganking is absolutely nothing to take pride in.. Neither is beating a child.. Or... Ganking a newbie or miner
ReplyDeleteA kill is a kill even if its a gank. Also what does beating children have to do with ganking?
DeleteSTOP KILLING THE CHILDREN!!
DeleteSTOP KILLING THE JEWS!
DeleteEND SLAVERY
DeleteKILL HITLER
Delete"Hey its not nice to tell people to kill others only code monkeys can do that that's why we always cry so hard here when people actually do like we do because that was what we did and you shouldn't take away our only means of fighting."
DeleteCode cries to mommy to make the mean PVP'ers go away.
Code then cries to daddy because the miner touched his ore.
Ganking is not pvp, as it makes completely no difference if the target is piloted or not. It's a pve with spectators.
ReplyDeleteOn the article section, another ganktard has discovered that in current game balance he can destroy ships for free in a desperate attempt to compensate the difference between jupiter-sized ego and athletic/academic record of a hedgehog.
If anything, you're an epic slowpoke, and an unicellular cretin, who wants to feel less of a cretin by having other people do what you do to feel it's not retarded since everyone is doing it. Not happening, moron, you're still an idiot.
Because they cant actually risk good ships, they cannot fight real players, if they went and fought in low and null they would lose everything.
DeleteHisec ganking is a valid gamemechanic.
ReplyDeleteHowever jamesfriend radax and his pathetic dimwits do it, because that is the --> only thing, they are capable of. They don't do it for the isk benefit, they do it for the easy kills. They do not hunt a prey, wait for a long time, to meet an opponent that shoots back and kills them instead otherwise.
You can not spell DOUCHE without CODE!
ReplyDeleteCHODE, CODE, THEY SOUND SO ALIKE
DeleteCode takes loads, in the butt.
DeleteLittle Quiz:
ReplyDelete- A guy that tries to put him self on a podest.
- is full of himself for no special reason
- is desperate angling for more followers
- wants to convince ppl that hisec ganking is (elite!)pvp
- writes walls of texts
- tells stories about the rough live in losec
- could not make friends in nullsec (reason for leaving 0sec)
- but tells stories about having friends in the game.
And his name is
James315
I mean
Radax Glenn!
Honi soit qui mal y pense / Shame be to him who thinks evil of it
;)
Muahahahaha
What you wimp is want is more other wimps so that you are no more an incompentent idiot and can hide behind your group. hisec ganking is legit but not an all time kind of play in eve. entities like you and code-apes, are anything but playing pvp.
ReplyDeleteBecause there is no "versus".
It IS ganking and not PvP. grieving is also a fitting name. PvP? no kiddy, thats not pvp!
Larsulrik Is a gigolo in real life too
ReplyDeleteJames has my rawhide thong dangling around his neck.
DeleteHe likes to lick the dong
DeleteJames likes dick, who knew, oh right his boyfriend knew. They do make a cute couple, James is always led around by a leash. What a good lil submissive he is.
DeleteI do not like highsec or lowsec ganking, these who are doing it will always be traitors or cowards in my eyes, As for me, ganking must be punishable even to permanent ban Of course, CCP will remain it in Eve, 'cause it is a part of game mechanic and Eve. And when u will loose your ship u will buy new. Just for business, nothing personal, heh.
ReplyDeleteI will accept any form of PVP as long as both sides have equal chances of defending , engaging or being aware of what is going on at least. Please explain to me how any miner or freighter can defend vs a 15man gang who all are expendable -10 alts with unlimited null sec harvested resources. And don't give me the being aware thing. Most EVE players , even the gankers themselves, know why high sec gankin is doable. Very few have the balls to admit it.
ReplyDeletePVP my ass.
What's expendable about an alt that has tens of millions of skill points in specialized training?
DeleteDo you even know anything about EVE, other than the types of ore you highsec crybears are licking off the Gankers boot?
There are no 'even' fights in EVE, that's the whole point you yarrtards, bring enough firepower, and resolve, to destroy your opponent, or go the fuck home.
Save that 'even' stuff for tourneys and team shooters.
EVErything you hate about EVE is what makes it great. You belong elsewhere, "miners".
Good evening, New Eden. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of everyday routine, the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition, the totality of blogs. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, where upon important events of the past, usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, are celebrated with a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are, of course, those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with moderator accounts will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well, certainly, there are those who are more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable. But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, ganking. They were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, James 315. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. This night, I seek to end that silence. This night, I corrupt the MB to remind this community of what it has forgotten. A great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words; they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this Code remain unknown to you, then I would suggest that you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me, inside the gates of High Sec, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot.

ReplyDeleteHow CODE acts:
ReplyDeleteGovernment agencies at all levels aimed to exclude Jews from the economic sphere of Germany by preventing them from earning a living. Jews were required to register their domestic and foreign property and assets, a prelude to the gradual expropriation of their material wealth by the state. Likewise, the German authorities intended to "Aryanize" all Jewish businesses, a process involving the dismissal of Jewish workers and managers, as well as the transfer of companies and enterprises to non-Jewish Germans, who bought them at prices officially fixed well below market value. From April 1933 to April 1938, "Aryanization" effectively reduced the number of Jewish-owned businesses in Germany by approximately two-thirds.
What code forces miners to pay for:
During the Nazi era, German authorities reintroduced the Jewish badge as a key element in their plan to persecute and eventually to destroy the Jewish population of Europe. They used the badge not only to stigmatize and humiliate Jews but also to segregate them and to watch and control their movements.
How code fights:
Blitzkrieg means “lightning war”. It was an innovative military technique first used by the Germans in World War two and was a tactic based on speed and surprise. Blitzkrieg relied on a military force be based around Light tank units supported by planes and infantry (foot soldiers). The tactic was based on Alfred von Schlieffen’s ‘Schlieffen Plan’ – this was a doctrine formed during WWI that focused on quick military victory. It was later developed in Germany by an army officer called Heinz Guderian who looked at new technologies, namely dive bombers and light tanks, to improve the German army’s maneuverability.
Minerbumping.com propaganda is just like:
Films released to the public concentrated on certain issues: the greed of Jews; the greatness of Hitler; the way of life for a true Nazi especially the young and as World war 2 approached, how badly Germans who lived in countries in Eastern Europe were treated.
Josiah be praised, he has brought content back to minerbumping.com James has fallen to his feet and begged forgiveness and Josiah has grated mercy and allowed content to return.
ReplyDeleteHail Josiah 630
Don't kid yourselves. Even the dirtiest pirates from the birth of EVE have been carebears. They use alts to bring them goods at cheap prices and safely, rather than live with consequences of their in game actions on their main, from concord to prices

While technically ganking is pvp, only idiots would say it's in any way a fair engagement. The ganker holds all the cards and it annoys me when people reveling in destroying someone else's day is 'the hero'
ReplyDeleteTo me, ganking is like a 15 year old bully beating up a 6 year old nerd. It would be classified as a fight nonetheless, but fair? Hell no. Patting your own back by claiming to be a fighter when all you do is beat up defenseless kids is just sad, lame and a little scary. Same applies to gankers, claiming to pvp when blowing up more or less defenseless miners(that by the way, have no way of actually hitting back) and justifying it by saying "they could fit for a fight too" is just... Lame. Did you ever consider that they don't want to fight, so why should they fit for one? You way of playing the game is no more right than their way.
Eve is riddled with people justifying their inner sociopaths by saying 'that's life and that's eve', indicating that anybody that don't like their way of playing is wrong. That is Exactly why I stopped playing years ago. People ruining my day for kicks, tears or other excuses are the blight of eve, and will eventually be the death of the game.
Any ganker should think about their actions for a second, and consider doing their pvp with others that enjoy the same play style, and that actually fight back. Your precious kill mails might look a bit different, tho...
Oh look the high sec teddy bears still playing "elite PVP".

Just admit it. You're hiding in high-sec in a controlled environment to avoid random acts of PvP that would be used against you while at the same time, shouting how high-sec PvP is the ultimate proof of your skill.
Get in a real fight, you guys are so terrible.
ReplyDeleteThe initiative can get you fixed up right.
Don't scare the elite PvPers bro. They pvp with dangerous retrievers and haulers. It takes a lot of effort and timing to achieve that.

ReplyDeleteDEATH RULE #1
Whenever you hear that someone has died, even if it's a distant friend, make a wish in your mind that they are greeted by "X" person (someone GOOD you know who has also passed on). If everybody did this, then no soul will enter the tunnel alone. There will be more lights waiting for them to light the way.
DEATH RULE #2
When you wish to speak to someone on the other side that has already interacted with your light - in the living, light up a candle and stare at the whitest part until it fills out your mind. Then talk to your loved one as if they're still living -- in living light.
DEATH RULE #3
Do not forget the dead. Just because the departed have left their physical boats DOES NOT mean they have left us. Believe it. And in the time when they have passed on and until you die, you can do a lot for them - and many of them are depending on you. However, due to cosmic law they are forbidden to disturb the living the same way we are forbidden to disturb the dead. You can add goodness to their scales by praying that they be shielded and guided in Light, by repeating vocally good things they did, and by truthfully vibrating goodness they provided to YOU into the cosmic sphere. The rules of the Dead prevent them from telling you this, but I am. So in other words, the vibration of your deeds in the living must surpass your death. EVERYTHING ELSE is irrelevant.
DEATH RULE #4
You have 7 days following the death of a loved one to tap into their vibrations on the physical plane. After someone dies, the symphony of vibrations that swims around their aura automatically gets turned off with their last breath. In this transition from this plane into the next, the "physical" resonance left from that departed soul still rings in the present - for 7 days. In a divine way, this period was heavenly designed to show the deceased the true from the foe and what the living really thought of him or her. This loved one can see and hear everything from a parallel or birds-eye point of view but they are invisible to the living. However, this perspective fades once their complete essence has crossed to the other side. After that, they visit this plane with a soul completely in the ethereal. Within the 7 days of the death of a loved one, find a room you shared energy in together or a place familiar to you both. Let it be your own room with an OPEN window near the bed. If it's cold, light a candle next to your bed. When you start drifting between consciousness and unconsciousness, think of the person and fill your head with light like the Sun. Ask questions and talk to your loved one. If you do this in a love state of mind, you will feel their love come with a breeze through the window - even if there is none outside. The transaction will be purely telepathic but you will feel their warmth as if it were solar. Believe it. You will think it was all a dream. This warmth you feel envelope your being is actually the PUREST form of LOVE and it will bring tears to your eyes. If you are using your candle, you will feel someone standing next to your bed, sitting on it, or a wave of warm heat around you. It's the most overwhelming sensation you may ever feel in your lifetime. In this light, quickly send love and forgiveness. You have just been visited.
DEATH RULE #5
Never fear Death for you will feel aroused by his sleep. Never cheat death or he will serve you a sentence of misery for the defeat.
ReplyDeleteDEATH RULE #6
If you ask for Death, he will hear you. If you fear Death, he will feel it. If you think of Death, Death will think of you. When you do think of Death, think of him as just one in the crowd. There is Harmony, Truth, Patience, Love, and many others. Never pull him out of the mix and give him special attention. He's the class clown who likes to scare people. Pay him no mind and have no fear. Harmony will be at your meeting with Death with her harp and flute. And Love will be waiting with Truth and Patience -- if you had them originally in you.
DEATH RULE #7
When you notice a bird outside your window, on your front door step, somewhere in front of you, observing your every move, watching intensely, studying you, making you very aware of their presence and once you acknowledge them, they fly away towards the sky. Know that a loved one was checking up on you. It is very real and no coincidence. Send a verbal or telepathic message to the bird to deliver to a loved one for I promise you they will. Throughout history, birds have acted as messengers between the living, and the living and deceased. If a bird should make its way into your living space, let them know you are alright and send it peacefully on its way. You have just been visited.

ReplyDeleteThe next gold rush will be intergalactic.
ReplyDeleteIn 2009, a collection of astronauts, academics, and aerospace industrialists convened to review NASA’s present and future plans for manned space flight. Informally dubbed the “Augustine Commission,” the more-stuffily named Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee determined that our ultimate goal ought to be nothing less than “to chart a path for human expansion into the solar system."
Considering that Earth’s resources are finite and that the well of human desire knows no bottom, a continued future for our species will likely require robust manned spaceflight to leave the planet. But it remains incredibly expensive and logistically complex to see humans break the planet’s escape velocity, let alone with any regularity. The ostensibly modern spacecraft of today carry all their fuel with them from the start — a lot of that fuel is required simply to transport other fuel. It’s comically inconvenient.
Contemporary spaceflight is impractical by virtue of being unsustainable; it’s a pursuit for governmental agencies and rich visionaries. Now an industry with its roots in prehistory is changing that tune, summoning up a modern set of incentives for people to get more intimate with outer space. “Space mining” presents itself as a killer technology for interstellar travel and exploration — the miners are due to inherit the stars as we set their sights beyond our planet to harvest geological resources from the universe itself.
The minerals we pull out of the the ground — whether they’re worth money or are useful for some process — have the same composition as the minerals that comprise planets and asteroids. So what good are those minerals doing us out there? A website called Asterank charts the economic feasibility of mining some 600,000 different asteroids for their resources — one 90-foot-wide platinum asteroid is worth a respectable $50 billion on Earth. The incentive is undeniable.
More than turning asteroids into money, however, today’s space mining entrepreneurs are intent on turning asteroids into figurative gas stations. The ubiquitous space rocks are commonly home to water ice — or hydrogen and oxygen, the building blocks of rocket fuel.
ReplyDeleteDeltion Innovations is a Canadian company developing hardcore robotic drills and excavation systems to sell to others for use in outer space. Once a mining operation has successfully harvested ice, CEO Dale Boucher says, “We can break that water ice into its hydrogen and oxygen components by putting a DC voltage into it. This breaks the bonds of water apart, with the hydrogen going to one electrode and the oxygen going to another. This is called electrolysis, and we can use it in space to make fuel.”
In its perfect, refined form to come, space mining stands to radically normalize the notion of interstellar travel. With an easily refilled gas tank, future spacecraft will be free of the usual time and planning restrictions. Suddenly the whole galaxy is the scenic route.
Nations are of course paying attention at the political level. The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 asserts that no country can claim ownership over an asteroid, planet or other heavenly body. But President Barack Obama signed the U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act in November 2015 specifically to make it legal for American space mining companies to pursue their goals (the Act protects these companies and others from regulatory oversight until October 1, 2023 — the tone is perhaps, “Do what you have to do to make this work, then we’ll worry about making it safe”).
Space mining is the new Wild West — the resources hidden in asteroids are there for whoever can get there to gather them first, and one of the least-likely countries is leading the way.
ReplyDeleteLuxembourg is a European country smaller than Rhode Island, but don’t let its size suggest a shortage of vision. Its government launched a $227 million fund earlier this year to invest in space mining companies that set up operations within the country’s borders, sending a strong message that the country intends to play a meaningful role in the changing nature of space travel. The incentive has already attracted American space mining companies Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries.
“If we want to keep building communities and raising families, at some point we outgrow the earth,” says Planetary Resources president and CEO Chris Lewicki, who previously worked on Mars rovers for NASA. “We’ve left the planet before — it’s something we know how to do, something the government has spent money on. The challenge for companies operating in this space is how to do it more cost-effectively, and how to do it for commerce instead of science.”
Related: How Computers Are Learning to Predict the Future
Lewicki says space miners will face all the same problems that terrestrial miners know all too well. Where’s the best place to drill? How much material is there? The fundamental skills and knowledge are largely unchanged, but the environment will be unlike anything humans have ever mined before. “We've previously crossed oceans and flown through the air, and today we have the technology to explore space. Asteroids are like rocks on the ocean shore of a new continent.”
As coal miners lose jobs by the tens of thousands, it’s clear that the nature of mining (and even the nature of work itself) is changing dramatically. The mining that humans do on Earth today will be done in space by robots tomorrow, and humanity will be better for it.
How else will we carry out the task of expanding into the solar system?
The Latin phrases De mortuis nihil nisi bonum and De mortuis nil nisi bene [dicendum] ("Of the dead, [say] nothing but good") indicate that it is socially inappropriate to speak ill of the dead. As a mortuary aphorism, De mortuis. . . . derives from the Latin sentence De mortuis nil nisi bonum dicendum est ("Of the dead nothing but good is to be said"), which also is abbreviated as Nil nisi bonum. Freer translations into English are often used as aphorisms, these include: "Speak no ill of the dead", "Of the dead, speak no evil", and "Do not speak ill of the dead".
ReplyDeleteThe first recorded use of the phrase of mortuary respect dates from the 4th century, published in the Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers (ca. AD 300), Book 1, Chapter 70, by Diogenes Laërtius, wherein the Greek aphorism τὸν τεθνηκóτα μὴ κακολογεῖν (tòn tethnekóta mè kakologeîn, “Don’t badmouth a dead man”) is attributed to Chilon of Sparta (ca. 600 BC), one of the Seven Sages of Greece. In the 15th century, during the Italian Renaissance, the humanist monk Ambrogio Traversari translated Diogenes’s Greek book into Latin, as Laertii Diogenis vitae et sententiae eorum qui in philosophia probati fuerunt (1433), and so popularized De mortuis nihil nisi bonum, the Latin aphorism advising respect for the dead.[1]
The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867), by Anthony Trollope After the sudden death of the Bishop's wife, the Archdeacon describes De mortuis as a proverb "founded in humbug" that only need be followed in public and is unable to bring himself to adopt "the namby-pamby every-day decency of speaking well of one of whom he had ever thought ill."
ReplyDeleteThe Power-House (1916), by John Buchan After destroying the villain, Andrew Lumley, the hero, Sir Edward Leithen, speaks De mortuis & c., an abbreviated version of the phrase, about the dead Lumley.
The Haunted Bookshop (1919), by Christopher Morley Roger considers De Mortuis Nil Nisi Bonum as a possible inscription on the gravestone for Bock, his dog that died in an explosion.[2]
Lonely Road (1932), by Neville Shute After the thwarting of his gun-running operation, meant to alter the course of British politics, the villain, Professor Ormsby, challenges the hero, Commander Stevenson, with the phrase De mortuis nil nisi bonum, to imply that he, Prof. Ormsby, would kill himself, for which reason Commander Stevenson would cancel the news-media campaign with which he had planned to publicly discredit Ormsby as a traitor. To the implicit, honour-saving offer, Stevenson replies, “Certainly, I am concerned with justice in this matter, not with politics.”The next day, Professor Ormsby defenestrates himself from his rooms at Cambridge University, and Commander Stevenson returns to his life on the River Dart.
Murder Must Advertise (1933), by Dorothy L. Sayers About the dead man, two characters speak; the first asks: “What sort of chap was Dean?” . . .The second replies: “Well. De mortuis, and all that, but I wasn’t exactly keen on him. I thought him rather an unwholesome little beast.”
Busman’s Honeymoon (1937), by Dorothy L. Sayers About the dead man, two characters speak; the first, Mr Puffett, says: “They’re takin’ Mr. Noakes away” . . . “It’s a good thing Mr. Noakes ain’t alive to see all that ’eap of coal. That’s a fire as does credit to any chimney.”Hearing steps on the path, and seeing a dismal little procession passing the window: a sergeant of police and another uniformed man, carrying a stretcher between them . . . Mr. Puffett glanced from the window and removed his bowler hat: “And where’s all ’is cheeseparin’ brought ’im now?” he demanded. The second man, Lord Peter Wimsey, says: “Nowhere . . . De mortuis” and then some . . . Yes, he seems to be getting a nice derangement of epitaphs, poor old creature.”
Player Piano (1952), by Kurt Vonnegut. An engineer, Dr. Paul Proteus, recalls the phrase de mortuis in relation to fellow workers who committed a social faux pas during the annual social gathering; they would not be invited for the next year’s gathering.
Deus Irae (1976), by Philip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny Father Handy thinks of the phrase in reference to millions of people killed by nerve gas. He then subverts the phrase to "de mortuis nil nisi malum" in blaming them for complacently voting in the politicians responsible.
Rites of Passage (1980), by William Golding The phrase is used during a conversation between the narrator and Miss Granham in the final section of the novel. After she calls the late Colley a "truly degraded man", Talbot springs to his defence: "Come, ma'am...de mortuis and all that! A single unlucky indulgence — The man was harmless enough."
The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud mentions the phrase in Thoughts for the Times on War and Death (1915), in the second part of the essay, “Our Attitude Towards Death”, wherein he said:
ReplyDeleteWe assume a special attitude towards the dead, something almost like admiration for one who has accomplished a very difficult feat. We suspend criticism of him, overlooking whatever wrongs he may have done, and issue the command, De mortuis nil nisi bene: we act as if we were justified in singing his praises at the funeral oration, and inscribe only what is to his advantage on the tombstone. This consideration for the dead, which he really no longer needs, is more important to us than the truth, and, to most of us, certainly, it is more important than consideration for the living.[3]
The earliest known use of this expression is in The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers written by Digenese Laërtius around 300 AD. In this he attributes Chilon of Sparta as saying "don't badmouth a dead man." Chilon was one of the Seven Sages of Greece - a title given by Ancient Greek tradition to seven 6th century BC philosophers and statesmen who were revered for their wisdom.
ReplyDeleteIt probably made its way into modern day venacular via Abrogio Traverssari's Latin translation of Diogenes's book in the 15th century. It appears to have made its way to America with the early settlers as it appears in "Will and Doom." Despite sounding like the name of a rather violent computer game, "Will and Doom or the Miseries of Conneticut by and under an Usurped and Arbitrary Power" is a book by Gersham Bulkeley written in 1692.
While it is socially inappropriate in most circles to speak ill of a person in the immediate aftermath of their death, fortunately this belief does not hold sway for the long term or otherwise, to take an extreme example, we would have no recorded history at all. Putting aside public figures, while modern-day psychologists would likely agree that there comes a point when it is best to put something behind us rather than to continue to dwell on it, they would also likely agree that it is important not to white-wash over past events as the actions of the dead may not be able to physically harm us anymore but certainly can continue to do so mentally.
I had my MB comment bingo card out when I read this blog post's comments. I scored a top-left to bottom-right bingo! Woo-hoo!

DeleteGet GUD join a real PVP corp or stay there like a miner.
Look A Nazi jihadi.

DeleteSounds like him.
DeletePoor code, they get so tearful over being trolled and told off.
ReplyDeletePlease keep crying and trying to act like top tier elites, we know you can actually pvp that's why you hide in high sec.
Good god they even act like miners hiding in high sec.
Code is miners.
DeleteOh nooooo
ReplyDeleteSomeone called you names so you posted it here to cry, its okay jamesy boy your feelings matter too.
The code monkey remains in a state of darkness. Never fear, dear reader: Our Agents are always ready to rescue a code monkey, whenever an opportunity presents itself.
ReplyDeleteAs the scope and influence of Concord have always been, an increasing number of EVE players have become helpers, sworn to uphold the law of high sec. They operate outside of the mighty law but are no less lethal.
ReplyDeleteLarsulrik Napsterbane learned first hand what it meant to break the law when concord warped in and blasted his ship to dust, leaving him with nothing but a pod.
Gankers have long recognized the deadly threat posed to them by members of Concord. Sometimes they forget but they are quickly reminded with quick reaction times and weapons superiority unmatched in all of eve.
Larsulrik may not yet understand, he may never understand, but Concord is yet to be defeated, and always wins, no matter the force, no matter the fleet no matter the crime.
We can only hope that these criminals will one day see the light that is Concord. Till then, they are simply wasting ships like suicide bombers of old. Always losing, always thieving always pretending.
Concord, they never fail.
Looks like the less than 1% is getting a bit of trash talk from some actual fighting players. Careful James you may lose some of your people, they may decide to stop playing your kid games and get into actual combat.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of anonymous whining. Good to see that The Code is still relevant. Praise James!
ReplyDeleteSo Professor, to you this is elite PvP. This is also roleplaying. So that means that you role play a character that is ok with killing unarmed people, now think about that.
DeleteYou can accept and play as a person who is actually perfectly fine and happy to promote killing unarmed people.
A sandbox game allows players to express who they are deep down inside but do not do so in a public setting for fear of reprisal.
That means you are in fact an actual person who is ok with killing unarmed people.
Anon, what you say isn't really true, now is it?
DeleteA sandbox game allows players to express whatever character trait/s they wish - in accordance with rules established and enforced by the game's designers.
It is no reliable indication of anything 'deep down' within their psyche. You seem intelligent; you should know this.
The very clear reason that the scallywags of EVE do not exhibit in public the traits you seem to have in mind is not that they fear reprisals, but that those traits are borrowed goods, for temporary use in a virtual setting in the pursuit of entertainment.
If you're going to tell someone off (especially a very senior and valued member of the New Order of Highsec such as Prof. Lawton), your argument might be more persuasive if it were grounded in some semblance of reality and not a hodge-podge of trite pseudo-psych fantasies.
Fortunately, you've helped me enormously in penning this little retort, by ending your garbage with a statement which is so laughable that - I laughed most heartily. Thank you!
I suspect you are young enough to believe that your comments are pointed and sharp, finding their target with painful accuracy. Let me disillusion you; they are blancmange sir, blancmange.
Robert I like your review of the anon
DeleteThose most affected by the game are those who don't feel affected at all.
DeleteRole-playing refers to the changing of one's behaviour to assume a role, either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role. While the Oxford English Dictionary offers a definition of role-playing as "the changing of one's behaviour to fulfill a social role".
DeleteA role-playing game is a game in which the participants assume the roles of charactersand collaboratively create stories. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization.
The characterization being that which one usually internalizes so as to adapt a more socially acceptable persona in a social reality.
Oh look Eugene Fischer is back.
DeleteRob knows you better than you know yourself sillyanon653.
DeleteHe understands that you are not as smart as you would like others to believe. If you could understand how foolish you sound it may make you think twice about posting your ignorance for the world to see.
I understand that he is making an intelligent argument and does not need your retarded ass trying to ride on his coat tails. Typical code monkey always trying sooo hard.
DeleteRob, understand this truly isn't about you nor your game style it a bunch of trolls mixed in with players who just like giving James and the code a hard time. It doesn't matter how you play or what you perceive to be true, your not going to get anywhere with the mob that has descended on this blog.
DeleteYour intellectual argument is going to be the same as yelling at a wall, people will hear you, people will acknowledge you, people will agree with you. But the wall is just a wall.
Rob, proof that intelligence can be part of a destructive ideology.
DeleteThankfully this is a game and not something important.
So the comment was a sweet dessert commonly made with milk/cream and sugar thickened with gelatin.
DeleteOr it was a 1979 synthpop band.
Lawton still getting spanked by Goonswarm he just mad he cant be a real player and has to stick with popping off miners.
DeleteHave you tried applying again Lawrence, they reject you again.
So these are borrowed trait for entertainment, so your saying that players in the code are entertained by bullying other players who have little chance of defending themselves. Its like virtually pulling the wings off a fly for fun.
DeleteNow again I have to ask in your argument you want this guy to be grounded in reality, yet this is an extension of the gaming environment to which this is not reality.
So should players in this forum be grounded in reality while commenting or be settled into the role play while commenting?
Hi Anon 202. 'Should' is an awful concept; I am wary around it.
DeleteRole-play done well has its own internal integrity. In order to achieve this, the superficial elements like language, costumes, etc., are bound to a rock-solid central position which is understood and agreed by the participants.
In our case, this is the Code. James' achievement in writing and propagating it is nothing short of astounding. I've always said so and I defy anyone to pick it apart on its own terms.
The point of all this is the answer to the question posed at the end of your comments. Whether one's comments are 'grounded in reality' or 'settled into role-play', if they do not display that internal integrity - i.e. if they are lacking, given their origin (reality or role-play) they will struggle to convince; and may be exposed for what they are, hopefully leading the writer to reflect on what he has said and tighten things up.
But what is the role one is to play in this forum, to role play appropriately or stay grounded in reality using this site as a means to share in stories of a gameplay and perhaps question methods and strategy?
DeleteOf course your answer would be of your opinion, I do not think that some of those who are on this site that share in your love of the gameplay mechanics that code provides will choose to act by that opinion, but as you are a person who actively debates and responds rationally I value your opinion.
Hi Anon 545.
DeleteMy opinion is informed by having spent years involved with James' output, both on the blog and elsewhere. The 'elsewhere' being his pieces for the (now) Imperium site and a wide-ranging interview for Crossing Zebras in the run-up to his CSM campaign.
The blog is the only one of these sources in which role-play and 'reality' are mixed up in a sort of virtuoso display whose ultimate purpose is humour/entertainment. To get a laugh, you might say.
No one does it quite as well as James himself, and the comments section well reflects this. Thus, you see comments which display both approaches. Naturally enough, those under the general heading of 'anti-ganking' ignore the role-play and attempt (and frequently fail) to fault the Code supporters, mainly for the reasons I mentioned in the other comment I made.
So, we have role-players versus non role-players in the comments sections. Trolls are not true role-players in the sense adopted by gamers. They appear to be immature opportunists, capable manipulators, and quite unable to commit to a sustained and evolving narrative, hence not true role-players.
I tend to vacillate between role-play and 'reality' in the comments section, though lately I've ditched the role-play because I'm bad at it.
If you're Code, then you'll largely avoid too much real-talk, because your weapons have been provided by James and all you have to do is fire them. If you're a rebel, you can adopt whichever persona you like. There's no consistent role-playing anti-ganking narrative to speak of, just a string of tired memes and miner-bingo quotes.
But whichever you choose, just aim to do it well. A lot of anti-gankers spew out the first thing that comes into their heads in a sort of embarrassing word-association exercise. And it shows. Take your time, think a bit, make it water-tight, and away you go!
So much butt hurt over a fail fit Retriever. More post today than HSM blog gets in two months, but keep crying how CODE is irrevelant
ReplyDeleteNO one said you weren't, they just saying you suck at the game and PVP.
Deleteganking is like a 15 year old bully beating up a 6 year old nerd.
DeleteEve is riddled with people justifying their inner sociopaths by saying 'that's life and that's eve', indicating that anybody that don't like their way of playing is wrong.
Anon504 is having a hard time seperating rl from intended game play.
DeleteDon't overthink it 504, you poor stupid bastard, it's just a game. You are trying real hard with those comparisons.
Whats wrong? Can't EVE properly so you try to hide your own deficiencies by calling those that best you "sociopaths". That doesn't even apply here, as the purpose of the game is to destroy others, namely the weak and willfully ignorant.
Show us on the doll where the mean ganker stuck his light neutron blasters.
Keep telling yourself that while you keep bringing up Kalynn as your platform against antiganking. please let me know where shardani touched you to make you all so tearful.
DeleteAnon547 Cant PVP properly so you rename ganking as PVP its ok tell me where pandemic horde touched you.
DeleteNone of these fucks can fight that's why they act all big in High Sec, the miners are the best thing they get to kill, with the exception of a few afk battleships. Code is a joke and no real PVP player takes them serious.
DeleteKeep suckin those miner tears, its just you crying that you cant survive real PVP.
So these are borrowed trait for entertainment, so your saying that players in the code are entertained by bullying other players who have little chance of defending themselves. Its like virtually pulling the wings off a fly for fun.

DeleteSee you in null bitch, or not. You too scared to go. XD
Look it onoe of Jameys little princesses. Still crying about not making it in null sec. Well its ok high sec is your place stay there where the noobs play.
DeleteSo the victims of their villainous deeds would descend upon them bringing forth new weapons and new warriors who would fight in new ways. Those who had done them harm would find fate without mercy and they would feign bravery. Alas fear wells up deep from within and a very real shiver ascends the spine of the criminals and murderers as they now look into the very mirror of their animosity. They cannot win a war that reflects themselves.
ReplyDeleteSo it is written in the book of rage.
